Advisory

I work with firms on what AI is doing to their work, to the people who do it, and to what the senior team should focus on.

I led through the AI disruption of a large digital business as a managing director, while accountable for its results, so this starts from having made the calls myself. What I advise on is everything the technology changes about how the work gets done and what an organisation should be developing its people towards.

Most companies have already documented what good looks like and have taught it more than once. When behaviour still does not change, the cause is in what people believe the role requires of them and what they would prefer not to be found out for, and repeating the content does not solve either issue.

Areas of focus

What changes in the work

Where AI changes the economics of the business, and where it produces an impressive demonstration and little else.

How AI changes what a leader's day contains, and what they need to be able to do differently as a result.

What changes in how people learn

How juniors acquire judgement when the work they used to learn it on is automated, and what to protect in the training model before it goes.

How to design development that changes what people do, when they already know the content and are not applying it.

What organisations have to decide

What to do with high performers who cannot explain what they do, when the firm needs them to teach it.

What coaching and development capability to build inside and what to buy.

Recent work

Integrating AI into the daily work of a global consumer goods business, and in particular what it changed about how its senior people spent their time and what they had to learn to do differently.

A working session with the partner group of a global advisory firm on the beliefs that shape how they sell, and on what stops them qualifying opportunities in the way they have already agreed opportunities should be qualified.

The design of a six-month programme building commercial capability in a consulting firm's partners, running skill building and mindset sessions in parallel and testing both against live client work.

How it works

Sometimes a diagnosis and a written design, sometimes a working session with a leadership team or a partner group, and sometimes both. The subject is agreed beforehand and I prepare against your firm and your situation.

I focus on advisory and design. Where a firm needs implementation or a longer programme, I will say so at the outset and point you towards people who do that well.

Advisory is priced by the day, and design work is quoted against scope.

Writing

Longer thinking on AI, leadership and the partner model.
